| Day 27: Saturday, July 23, Grants Village to Flagg Ranch, WY We rode 23.6 miles and climbed 681 feet. We climbed just a little out of Grant Village to one of the Continental Divides and then just drifted down into Flagg Ranch where we had just about as nice of accommodations as we have had on the trip so far. It was very nice to get onto the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Parkway outside of the South entrance to Yellowstone as it was the smoothest highway with the smoothest wide shoulder we had seen! It was only 2 miles into Flagg Ranch but we still enjoyed it! for more info click here Day 28: Sunday, July 24, Flagg Ranch to Togwotee Lodge We rode 43.5 miles and climbed 2844 feet We drifted out of Flagg Ranch with one little climb and then followed Jackson Lake for several miles past Coulter Bay and into Jackson Lodge where we had a great lunch. The initial views of the Tetons from the east side of Jackson Lake are truly spectacular. We then ventured eastward and after about 35 miles began climbing toward Togwotee Pass. Our climb to Togwotee Lodge from the point of the real grade beginning was about 1600 feet, so we have 1000 feet for tomorrow to top over! We have a cabin at Togwotee Lodge that you could truly live in for months. It is nice to have such comfortable lodging after a gruelling 6% grade climb! more info click here Day 29: Monday, July 25, Togwotee Lodge to Dubois We rode 37.7 miles and climbed 1579 feet. I did not have wi-fi in Dubois so could not get this done last night. Our motel was 2 miles north of downtown Dubois so we did not get to explore this lovely little community until we rode out on the way to Lander. Really a beautiful red rock area and I have posted lots of info and photos here Day 30: Tuesday, July 26, Dubois to Lander Today was a long and hard day of riding - 77.7 miles with 2000 ft of climbing and a head wind so we finally arrived after 5 and could not have gone another mile! Ray and Mary Hanson had invited us to stay at their home in Lander and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner and lots of sharing as they are avid bikers and tandemers and had lots of wonderful stories. Ray had assisted us in finding lodging for tomorrow night in Muddy Gap. Wonderful people we met through our friend Jay Guerin when we asked him for help getting through his State of Wyoming. For more info click here Day 31: Wednesday, July 27, Lander to Muddy Gap We rode 42.3 miles and climbed 997 ft and arrived at Muddy Gap happy and early! All that because Mary hauled us up to Sweetwater Junction - about 43 miles and up a lot of climb out of Lander, and we began our ride there. We simply did not have an 85 mile ride in us after that long one yesterday! The Lander area is truly beautiful with the best of the scenery in that 43 miles up to Sweetwater and I did not have my camera out so no photos of that! The folks who run Three Rivers Muddy Gap Services are great and are trying to make this a good stop for cyclists. It certainly is for us! There is a catering truck parked out front and they serve a good variety of sandwiches and stew so the food is no problem here. We had a convenience store breakfast before leaving and then a big breakfast 11 miles down the road at Lamont. If we only knew where these out of the way places were located each day and could depend on them being open!!! The stretch of road from Lamont into Rawlins had a lot of traffic and some of the shoulders were narrow and rough but over half of the distance was good riding surface. Yesterday we had our first flat tire on the bike, a small unexplainable hole in tube and today we had the same situation on a trailer tire. We hope this patternh stops! Gusty winds greeted us as we arrived in Rawlins. More info click here Day 33: Friday, July 29, Rawlins to Encampment Actually, we stayed in Riverside and did not even go up to Encampment. We rode 60 miles with a climb of 1660. The first 20 miles were our favorite kind-- on the shoulder of Interstate 80 and it was a quick and fun ride - but when we left the I-80 it became a bit more work and it was one of those days where you could see for miles and it was deceiving! The photos were great though so I hope I can retrieve them from the crashed computer! |
