Back to Homepage Back to Kansas
Because we were without our computer, we were unable to download photos daily so we could not take as many as we had on previous days, and because we are having to do the journal now - after we are home - we are going to cover the ride across Kansas in one document rather than a daily page.

This is a typical view of how Highway 50 was and pretty much how the scenery looked. We followed the Arkansas River Valley and there are lots of garden farms with produce for sale at stands along the highway.

The Arkansas River looks a bit different up in that area than it does down around Tulsa.

We were following the Santa Fe Trail too

Into our sixth State!

It does not look like much, but the owner made the best salsa we have ever tasted! and a pretty good hamburger too

another typical view

Coming into Syracuse, Kansas

another typical view
Later I think I got some sunflower fields a bit closer to the road

This is Day 44, entering Garden City, Kansas

We stopped at this Upholstery shop and he made us some foam pads to make our seats a bit more cushy!

Day 45, entering Dodge City, Kansas
These metal sculptures are very popular out there on the plains

a Dodge City park

A sight we always like to see!!!

and a sight we got very used to seeing - the feed lots are everywhere and keep these guys busy

Day 46, entering Larned, Kansas
We are back on the Adventure Cycling Route now because there were no motels between Dodge City and Hutchinson on Hwy 50 so we opted for shorter mileage this way

Crossing the Arkansas River again

Day 47, entering Hutchinson, Kansas

Day 48, entering Newton, Kansas

It was raining yesterday when we arrived at El Dorado, KS on Day 49, so no photos of our arrival
We found this little cafe for breakfast leaving El Dorado
Good breakfast and wonderful people

Part of the El Dorado Oil Museum

Day 50, entering Eureka, Kansas

Day 51, entering Chanute, Kansas

Tioga Suites Hotel, located right downtown, lovely rooms and a wonderful restaurant, Sophia's
A really welcome treat after some of the cafe's of the past several days

Chanute Main Street

Division offices for the Old Southern Kansas Division of AT&SF RR
Now housed the Safari Museum, gift shops and Library

Bridgett and Marcel from Switzerland
We met them about 10 miles east of Chanute

WELCOME TO PITTSBURG, KANSAS
Certainly a welcome sight to us

And there was Bruce Nixon in his green van
Another really welcome sight!
That's all there was of Kansas. Most days it was raining so I did not get the camera out. It was nice to have sunshine for this last day riding into Pittsburg.
We will still have a few Kansas miles when we resume the ride in September.
