We arrived in Florence on June 25th and explored that lovely little town on Sunday and rode 15.2 miles, climb of 405 then got everything ready to start the adventure on Monday. If you really want to know about our trip so far, click HERE Day 1: Monday, June 27, Florence to Eugene, Oregon. rode 73.3 miles, climb 1787 Having ridden out to dip our rear wheel into the Pacific Ocean yesterday, we were ready to leave for Eugene after another great night's sleep at the Landmark Inn. A young couple from Mobile Alabama were leaving the Landmark Inn heading north so they gave Lyndsey and the second bike suitcase a lift to the Mail Boxes Etc. and Dennis rode the tandem/trailer to MBE where we shipped the suitcase to Tiger Run so it would be there for us to use on August 1 when we change to the Barcroft Recumbent and ship the TwinAir home. Well, we who never ride in the rain—did today! It was really a lovely ride—starting at 9:00 in a cool moist 55 degrees and then becoming a balmy 64 by 1:30. We arrived at Bike Friday's shop at 3:30 and were met there by our dear friends—Richard and Robin Jean Parks from San Diego who had been riding with their grandchildren the past week and are now headed home. Again today we ate every chance we got and all the food was gooooood! Especially the Gingerbread pancakes we enjoyed about mid-morning. Don't you know we ride to eat? Day 2: Tuesday, June 28, Visit Bike Friday shop in Eugene rode 10.2 miles, climb 203 Day 3: Wednesday, June 29, Eugene to McKenzie Bridge rode 55.4 miles, climb 1226 on a beautiful sunny day--cool temps but that changed mid morning. For more info click here Day 4: Thursday, June 30, McKenzie Bridge to Sisters rode 48.5 miles climb 3850 - Dennis said our narrative for today is "We climbed the hill!" for more info click here Day 5: Friday, July 1, Sisters to Bend for the Northwest Tandem Rally rode 25.9 miles, climb 895 for more info click here Day 6: Saturday, July 2, rode 27.5 miles, climb 1241 - Northwest Tandem Rally with a mass start of about 250 bikes; tandems, triples, quads, and singles and many of each with a kiddie trailer or tagaolong attached. This is really a family oriented tandem rally and it is such fun to see all these families enjoying camping and bike riding together. more detail and photos click here Day 7: Sunday, July 3, Tandem Rally A great breakfast at the Westside Cafe and then a good rest day. more info click here Day 8: Monday, July 4, Bend to Prineville, rode 39.7 miles, climb 606 - Today we have to take the rental car back to the airport at Redmond so I will drive it and carry the trailer load and Dennis will ride solo the 18 or so miles to the airport. more info click here Day 9: Tuesday, July 5, Prineville to Mitchell rode 47.7 miles, climb 2368 We started out in Prineville and assumed a gradual climb with two or three steep sections in it to get us to Ochoco Pass, elevation 4720. The terrain to this point was very similar to a lot of the wide valleys in Colorado with tall shady pines and green grasses and a very cool breeze. However, when we crossed Ochoco Pass it became the Oregon High Desert with no shade and an immediate jump in temperature. We had a nice 7 mile downhill run before climbing about 10 miles gradually into Mitchell. for more click here Day 10: Wednesday, July 6, Mitchell to John Day rode 69.4 miles, climb 2929 The first 6 miles took 1 hour and 30 minutes-- the next 6 miles took 16 minutes! We began climbing Mitchell grade to Keys Cr. Pass out of the motel - then a nice 26 mile downgrade to Dayville and a mild 32 mile climb into John Day. The scenery was the most pleasant so far. more info click here Day 11: Thursday, July 7 John Day, to Sumpter rode 57.3 miles 4455 climb. Looking forward to crossing 3 passes over 5,000 feet today, we got an early start with a great breakfast at the The Outpost. And then for only the second time since Florence, we actually found open café's at mile 12 and mile 28! So we had a good coffee stop and a really good lunch stop. We were on the bike for more than 6 hours today! More info click here Day 12: Friday, July 8, Sumpter to Baker City rode 30.6 miles, climb 505 Slept very late this morning which we like to do, had a very late breakfast which we like to do, and cruised mostly downhill from Sumpter to Baker City. The scenery along the Powder River was a nice as anything we have seen so far. more info click here Day 13: Saturday, July 9, Baker City to Halfway Well, we woke up to the sound of rain this morning so we are trying to wait it out and hope it will quit by 9 a.m. The radar looks like that but we shall see. We will not have internet access tonight so I will just get this early report posted this morning while I watch it rain and then finish whenever I can. The Oregon Trail Interpretive Center located just outside of Baker City is quite impressive. If not for this hard rain we should have gone up there to spend more time this morning. We have found that all of the restaurants provide a lot of local information with historical photos and placemats with historical profiles of the courageous people who traveled the Oregon Trail in covered wagons. more info click here |
