Day 9: Tuesday, July 5, 2005

That gradual climb with a couple of steep areas was 30 miles long and one of those steep areas was nearly 15 miles long, so it was a good hard workout. And it was one of our shorter days so we know we have some good hard ones to come.

Mitchell is a very picturesque little village and in a lovely setting. It is very hilly and our Sky Hook Motel is high on a hill with gravel drive so we pushed the bike up and will not ride it down either. No phone line so I will hope to get this online tomorrow night in John Day.

We are still finding it easy to wake early so we plan to get a very early start tomorrow morning and since there is only one little café and it does not open until 8 a.m. I bought groceries and will cook breakfast before we leave. People we met coming from John Day said there is no food available between here and John Day. Our only tough climb tomorrow comes in the first 6 miles so getting a cool early start will be good for us.
