SPECIAL OCCASION
Luncheon and Bridge

From the President
Sandi Hodges
Fall is here and the Guild has enthuse-astically begun its fall activities.
Our first General Membership Meeting at Harwelden was attended by a large number of people. Mark Armstrong, with his usual passion, revved us up for Tulsa Opera’s first production of the year, namely, “Tosca.” His Insights for the Puccini opera were both interesting and spirited. Thank you, Mark!
Special Occasions‘ has celebrated its first two events with gusto. The reception for the late Beverly Sills in Marilyn Strange’s home and the gourmet dinner at the Stava’s were great. There are sixteen more events from which to choose which are all listed in the “Special Occasions” booklet. Call Lyndsey Morris for reservations; I guarantee you’ll enjoy yourselves!
We are fortunate to have a very capable Staff at Tulsa Opera. Please take time to meet them and thank them for their efforts if you haven’t already. Also, the Guild Board and membership are motivated to fulfill his or her roles which make this organization both vital and effective. Thank you, everyone.
The next General Membership Meeting will be on Oct. 19, at 11:30 a.m., in the lovely home of Marilyn Fowler. Dixie Reppe, Interim General Director of Tulsa Opera, will be our guest speaker. Looking forward to seeing each of you!

SPECIAL OCCASIONS RESERVATIONS
Lyndsey Morris is taking reservations for all of the Special Occasion events and wants to remind you of those that will be happening soon – Book Review/Media Exchange on October 14th, 6:00 p.m., at the home of Kay and Franklin Miller, with Jean Roberts giving us a review on Imagining Don Giovani by Anthony Rrudel while we indulge in heavy hors d'oeuvres and wine. This is also a Media Exchange and a good chance to pick up some new books, CD's, tapes and DVD's while sharing some of your old ones. Call Lyndsey at 298-2049 to make your reservations. Jean and Kay have put a lot of effort into this event and we all need to support them!
Orpha spent time in Alaska a few weeks ago and caught her limit of wonderful Salmon and Halibut – brought a bunch of it home fresh frozen and is going to serve this special treat at her Winter Garden under Glass/Gourmet Dinner in her home. It is scheduled for October 20th but she may have to change that date, so call Lyndsey at 298-2049 to make your reservation and get the details.
Our Oklahoma Centennial Celebration Supper event will be
SPECIAL OCCASIONS RESERVATIONS
Con’t. from Page 1
Saturday, November 3rd at Tulsa Elks Lodge and we all need to support this "Once in a Lifetime Event" so call Lyndsey at 298-2049 to make your reservations. This
event is being touted as a themed event with special table decorations
and costuming – BUT – if that is not something you enjoy, you can rest assured that there
will be tables supporting the event without the special decorations and without costumes. Lyndsey's table of 8 will not be in costume and no big deal about decorations so please feel free to come, support and enjoy – however you want! SUPPORT is the key word!
Bring your bridge group to our Luncheon and Bridge plus Style Show by Mary Ruby Apparel on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at the Oaks Country Club. Call Lyndsey at 298-2049 to make your reservations.
EDUCATION – Vice President
Ginny Roberts
By Orpha Harnish, Director
In case you have not read the Mission and Purpose of our organization lately, (or ever), this is a part of what it is: “The Guild of Tulsa Opera is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to promoting opera for the Tulsa community and region.......is dedicated to assisting Tulsa Opera through volunteer service, educational programming and financial support.”.......
Traditionally, we have put great emphasis on education–both children and adults–and as a result we have earmarked funds for music education–in schools and elsewhere. For music and/or opera education to continue, it is very important that we continue doing all that we can to augment the appreciation of music in our young children–the audiences of the future.
Carolyn Polston, our Vice President of Development, has selected the theme–“The Heart of a Child” – for this year’s fund-raising and social events. If you recall the time you first saw an opera or other musical concerts and the emotional impact that experience made on you; then you can eagerly join us as we work hard this year to reach The Heart of a Child all over this community.
Like the ripples from a stone thrown in the water, our Guild effort to reach The Heart of a Child meets our mission as a Guild. Moreover, by working together on our various programs and projects, we choose a cause more important than ourselves. Let’s just “do it!”
VOLUNTEER HAPPENINGS!
Lyndsey Morris
Early in September, Heather Hope put out a call for "HELP" asking for volunteers to assist with the mailing of the Opera Season Tickets. Several Guild members answered that call and spent several hours on Saturday, September 8th stuffing envelopes. Melanie Callison, Director of Ticketing Operations at Tulsa Opera, Inc., had the project so well organized – it was a joy to be a volunteer working on this project!
The Production Staff always requests volunteers to assist as "Lightwalkers" on those days the sets are being built at PAC – while the lighting crew works to set up the lighting. Guild volunteers assist by being on stage, walking, sitting and standing where the artists will be during the performances. This frees up the production staff for other tasks. This year we have a list of 10 Guild members who are willing to assist the staff.
Thank you to all who have answered these calls for help.
A New Member’s Confession
Hi, I’m Aline Wisher, a new volunteer. I have been working on fund-raisers and volunteering my time for many organizations around Tulsa for at least 20 years now. I recently became a member for the Guild and am finding out what fun I have been missing. It has become my favorite organization of all the years of my volunteer work. I realize the importance of your goal of raising money for promoting music education for Tulsa. I found that you needed more volunteers and I brought in several to help on your special projects. I brought new ideas of fund-raising into your “Special Occasions.” I become your “Take Note” Newsletter Editor. I’m having fun working, and learning about the opera. You have knowledgeable and dedicated people who will take opera on into the future. Your meetings are fun, the people are so warm and friendly, and might I say “the food is wonderful.” I’m looking forward to helping you meet your goals for the Guild of the Opera this coming year.
ENDOWMENT FUND
Doris Hilst
As we begin a new active Guild of Tulsa Opera Season, I want to take you to the old need to plan. As the old adage goes, “People Don’t Plan to Fail, They Fail to Plan.” Down through history thoughtful men and women have been concerned about their heirs and have wisely made plans for the distribution of their estates. Unfortunately, many individuals today neglect to do this, mistakenly thinking that estate planning is only for the very wealthy. Not realizing that anyone who owns anything has an estate. Many people fail to even draw up a will, leaving the disposition of their assets and even the choice of a guardian for their minor children to the state.
Why do so many postpone making plans for their heirs and the distribution of their estate? With proper planning, your legacy can live on.
We still have time to each participate in the Tulsa Community Foundation Challenge Grant. This grant provides necessity funds to build our endowment while providing funds for our needs today. No cash is given now. Your annuity will count toward our Tulsa Community Foundation Challenge Grant if the annuity is received by December 31, 2007. To find how easy, with no expense, it is to set up this conference. Call Mark Loeber at 918-491-0079. Don’t wait to set up your meeting too close to December 31, as Mr. Lober’s office may be booked. In fact, Mr. Wolfhill told me this morning that Mr. Loeber is very near to being booked.
We no longer have a special Post Office Box for the Endowment Fund. Mail your Memorial and other funds to Doris Hilst, 3336 E. 46th St., Tulsa, Oklahoma – 74135.

Please…………..Send your favorite Recipes to us….
We will compile the Guild Cookbook
In response to many requests that the Guild publish a Cookbook, Kay Miller and Aline Wisher have agreed to take on the task. This means that you need to pull out your favorite recipes, review them carefully, print or type them neatly, and forward them to Kay or Aline, whose addresses appear below. You can use e-mail or snail mail. You could even hand deliver them at a meeting!
When the cookbook is compiled, it will be a fund-raiser for the Guild and should be popular not only with members, but with the community as well. We need you to help get this done!
